Treasures in Plain Sight by Valerie Wilson
The treasure is in the lowly things…the things that people look down on, in the things that no one thinks to uncover. Think back to the days when grandparents would store their valuables among objects that would be in plain sight on a daily basis (i.e. coffee can, jars, flower pots, shoe boxes). You may have thought that something so obvious, much less…attractive, was capable of containing anything treasured.
But, too often we look for the treasure in the most appealing places and amongst the most appealing things…expensive houses, furnishings and cars. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with having such things. But they are best obtained when they are underneath your feet and not above your head. The treasure is worthless if you’re struggling to be cute and of great status.
Recently, I found the treasure of well-being in every area of my life by downsizing my business, a thing that is frowned upon. My treasure is in working less, yet experiencing some increase in finances (ruling my bills, not being ruled by them), having more time to spend with my husband and boys, and I can only imagine the physical and mental ailments that will be avoided. Most importantly, I get to spend extra time with my Daddy…studying his word; exploring his heart and learning of the plans that he has for my life.
I have found the treasure of dedicating more time to my studies rather than cramming, which in turn helps me to be fully able to help someone else. I believe that we have a great number of knowledgeable people but they have no understanding, for they have no idea of how to apply that knowledge…having the educational experience but still uneducated.
Consider this man, a lowly man through the eyes of the prophet Isaiah in chapter 53:1-3…”Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by others, a man of suffering and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised and we held him in low esteem”…and yet he possessed the treasure of eternal life.
So often we look for the treasure of love, comfort, peace and satisfaction without examining this man…Jesus, who is able to quench and make rich all of our desires. He wants to reveal himself to you by sifting through and modifying/changing areas of your life that will fill your cup…your cup of dissatisfaction, void, and discontentment.
